For some time now, I've wanted to buy Adobe Photoshop and have some fun...but there's no way I'm going to spend that kind of money and then sit and stare at the screen not knowing where to begin.
About a year ago, I found a digital scrapbooking site that offered free kits that needed software that could deal with layers. I found a free photo-editing software called The Gimp (weird, I know.) I downloaded it and tried one kit with some success, but could never really figure out how to use it for manipulating photos or creating images. I usually learn programs by just playing around, but truth is I've never really played long enough with this program.
Then, the other day I came across Paint.NET, another free image and photo editing software that features "support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools" as it says on the about page.
I downloaded it and it appears to be relatively user-friendly. But, I don't have a clue what I'm doing. While I like the photo-editing software I already have on my computer, I still want to know more about these layers thingies! I guess really, I don't know what it is I want to do with the images. I start with a blank page and have no idea what to do next. I hope I can find someone to walk me through some tools and maybe even find a class.
Paint.Net provides, "an active online comunity that provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins"...but darned if I can figure out anything they are talking about in the forums and the tutorials are beyond me, too.
What do you all like for playing with images?

You should check out the Pioneer Woman's blog if you still think your might be interested in Photo Shop. She posts techniques and how too's that are easy to follow and understand on her blog. Her pictures are amazing too. Her blog is one of my favorites. All in laymans terms.
PS. Your brother looks even cuter holding a baby. When is he going to have one of his own? : )
Grady is so precious.
good photo editing software is adobe photoshop. The open source version of photoshop is a program called gimp (just google it and download the windows binary to try it out) but then it's really finding stuff you like done then replicating it. I like to copy tutorials and tips I find in forums of favorite photo blogs (topleftpixel.com does a few great ones for exapmle) Good luck though, it's a good skill to have.
We use photo shop at our house for anything special, but for most things I just use picasa.
